Abstract

The quality of education depends heavily on the role of teachers in motivating students. Student motivation is very important to increase study performance and active participation in the learning process. In the Timor-Leste context, the challenge of improving the quality of secondary education requires a proactive approach by teachers. This research was conducted to identify effective teacher teaching strategies and models in increasing the motivation and learning performance of students in Dom Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo Paralelo Secondary School Afaca academic year 2018. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach with four teacher participants (4). Site collection techniques include in-depth semistructured interviews, systematic classroom observations, and analysis of school documents. Analysis of Miles and Huberman method (data reduction, data display, conclusion drawing/verification) with inductive approach. The results showed that interactive teaching strategies, using a variety of methods, and giving positive feedback were consistently effective in increasing student motivation. Teachers who create a positive and supportive learning environment, applying teaching models that attract students or actively participate, are able to significantly increase students' academic performance. The research provides important empirical evidence for the importance of teacher teaching strategies and models in enhancing the quality of micro school level education. The results can be used as a basis for the development of teacher professional training programs and the formulation of education policy in Timor-Leste.
